Larry Kramer publishes 'I Call You Murderers' open letter to Fauci; Fauci engages AIDS activists

In the May 31, 1988 issue of the Village Voice, playwright and ACT UP co-founder Larry Kramer published an open letter accusing NIAID director Anthony Fauci of mismanaging federally funded AIDS treatment research, calling him an 'incompetent idiot' and a 'murderer' over slow clinical trials. Fauci subsequently met with AIDS activists, and in June 1989 he endorsed a 'parallel track' approach that gave HIV-positive people who did not qualify for formal clinical trials access to experimental treatments — an early institutional model of community engagement in research design.
