On CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, hours after President Biden announced new federal vaccination requirements, chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta asked NIAID director Anthony Fauci how to make the case for vaccination to people already infected, citing the Israeli study's finding that natural immunity 'provides a lot of protection, even better than the vaccines alone.' Fauci said he did not have a 'really firm answer,' said the durability of infection-derived protection relative to vaccine protection was unresolved, and called it 'something that we need to sit down and discuss seriously.' The exchange aired the evening of September 9, 2021; much secondary coverage dated it September 10.

On January 14, 2020, the World Health Organization posted on Twitter that 'preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission' of the novel coronavirus identified in Wuhan. At a press briefing the same day, WHO's Maria Van Kerkhove said limited human-to-human transmission was possible, 'potentially among families,' but that there was 'no sustained human-to-human transmission.' On January 20, Chinese expert Zhong Nanshan publicly confirmed the virus was spreading between people; an AP investigation based on internal WHO recordings later showed WHO officials had privately complained through January that China was not sharing enough data to assess human transmission.
